What friable asbestos is, and why it is treated differently

Asbestos is called friable when it can be crumbled, pulverised or reduced to powder by hand pressure while dry. In that state it readily releases fibres, so SafeWork NSW and the NSW asbestos regulator treat it as higher-risk work. Non-friable (bonded) asbestos is the opposite: the fibres are locked into a solid material such as fibro cement sheeting, and it stays lower-risk while intact.

Here is the catch. When it is damaged, aged, weathered, fire-affected or water-blasted, non-friable asbestos can become friable, which is why a site inspection, not a guess, decides the class. Common friable materials include pipe and boiler lagging, sprayed fireproofing, loose-fill insulation and asbestos rope. How we carry out a friable asbestos removal

Every friable removal we run follows the same compliant sequence, explained to you before we start.

1. Inspection and identification. We confirm whether the material is friable, so the right controls are planned early.
2. Notification to SafeWork NSW. Licensed friable work must be notified to SafeWork NSW at least five days before it begins. On a build programme that lead time matters, so we lodge early and plan around it.
3. Sealed containment. The work area is fully enclosed and sealed.
4. Negative air and HEPA filtration. The enclosure runs under negative pressure through HEPA filters, fine enough to trap asbestos fibres, so air leaving the site is clean.
5. Wetting. Materials are kept wet so fibres cannot become airborne as they are removed.
6. Supervised removal. A nominated supervisor stays on site for the entire removal, with the crew in full protective equipment.
7. Decontamination. Workers, equipment and the site are decontaminated before the enclosure comes down.
8. Disposal. Waste is double-bagged and disposed of at an EPA-licensed facility, with tipping dockets kept as your record.

Air monitoring and your independent clearance certificate

This is the step to check any friable quote against. For Class A work, the air monitoring and the final clearance inspection are not done by the removalist. They are carried out by an independent licensed asbestos assessor, engaged separately, so the sign-off is genuinely at arm’s length. That independence is a requirement of the national asbestos code of practice, and it protects you.
